Legal Action Committee

The legal committee will be ready to respond with an appeal based on canon law when the decree arrives from the Archdiocese - which is now expected in early August. There are other avenues we are pursuing, and we do need assistance. We urge parishioners, particularly those who are lawyers, to consider joining the legal committee.

If you can help with legal areas (Canon law and civil law), including:

Information specific to the status of the real estate which the church and parish hall occupy – what were the terms of the original land grant ? There may be legal restrictions that can be brought to bear on the sale of the property.
Research into precedents in requirements for closing churches
Research into “who owns the church” ?

· 2004-07-01 Sacred Heart's Legal Committee has prepared a packet outlining specific points of canon law on which to base an appeal to the Archbishop to revoke an Edict (decree) of Suppression. To request a copy of the packet, please send an email to legalcommittee@sacredheartappeal.org, with your name, phone number, and affiliation.

· 2004-06-29 Contacts have been made and preliminary discussions regarding Canon law basis for an appeal have started. Plans are in place to continue more detailed discussions and research.
