Targeted Catholic School Gets Reprieve
Secretary Of State Pledges Line Of Credit
BOSTON -- Our
Lady of the Presentation School in Brighton, targeted for closing by the
Boston Archdiocese last week, has gotten a reprieve.
The school will stay open for at least one more year after a
prominent alumnus -- Massachusetts Secretary of State William Galvin --
personally pledged a $100,000 line of credit for the school.
Along with 65 parishes, Our Lady of the Presentation was one of
three Catholic schools ordered closed last month by the Archdiocese of
Boston.
The financial offer from Galvin -- as well as intense lobbying from
students and parents -- prompted Bishop Richard Lennon to grant the school
a 12-month reprieve.
Galvin said he knows he's taking a risk, but says it's a risk well
worth taking.
